Women are powerful and strong, but are often told that factors like their body weight, age, menstrual pains, pregnancy, and disabilities can hold them back. Sport England wants to crush these stigmas and launched This Girl Can, a campaign to empower women to get active in their own ways, in 2015.
This Girl Can is a growing community of women who share their stories, offer advice and inspiration, and suggest different ways to get active. They are always looking for more supporters to join in and “encourage women and girls of all shapes, sizes, abilities and backgrounds to get active.”
The campaign’s homepage makes their mission clear, “No one gets to choose how you exercise other than you. Your body, your call. And whatever that looks like, we think it’s worth celebrating.”
Their website offers links to a wide variety of online classes and suggestions for home exercises. There is even a list of “100% Kid Approved” workouts catered to the busy moms who also want to get the whole family involved and moving.
This Girl Can relaunched an updated campaign in 2020 to celebrate and inspire women to stay active during the pandemic. The campaign features a film showcasing a range of women who are fitting physical activity in between their hectic schedules during lockdown.
“We’re back with This Girl Can celebrating the fact that there’s no right way to get active – there never was. Just like there’s no right way to do lockdown. We’re celebrating all the women getting active in the ways that work for them, no matter what life throws in their way. Saying it’s okay to do it when you want, how you want,” Kate Dale, campaign lead, said in a statement. “The pandemic has given many of us a renewed appreciation for the benefits of mental and physical health, and we hope the film will inspire other women to want to feel that joy of moving, whether they’re jogging with their kids, squeezing in a HIIT session in between meetings or trying to walk instead of get the bus to get their steps up.”
