However, the former UConn star has also become known for her comebacks. During the course of her WNBA career, Bird has undergone four surgeries that have forced her to miss significant action.

She’s in the midst of another comeback after missing all of the 2019 WNBA season because of a knee injury.

“Injury is part of sport,” Bird told Newsday.

Yes, but for Bird and all her success and glory, seems to be snake bitten by them. She suffered a knee injury in 2012 that led to her missing the entire 2013 season. Bird had a procedure on her knee in April of 2017, but was back on the court just over a month later.

The surgeries and subsequent rehabilitation sessions are a grind for the 39-year-old Bird, but she appeared up to the challenge in the fall when she was playing for Team USA in exhibition games against NCAA teams.

“The college tour really represented a way for me to ramp back up,” Bird told ESPN. “The plan was to be in my peak-performing shape and for the most part, I felt great.”

But then the WNBA season was postponed because of the global pandemic. the Olympics in Tokyo were also pushed back a year and Bird wasn’t sure if it was going to affect her comeback.

“The way I feel about it is if I’m in good health, I’m still at the top of my game, playing elite level and USA Basketball calls me and is like, ‘Hey, you want to do this?’” Bird told the Hartford Courant. “Of course I’m going to do it. You’ve got to take care of what you can and then once you get to that point, you’ll know.”

However Bird and Team USA dominated the Olympic Games in 2021 when the team won gold, making Bird a five-time Olympic gold medalist — Bird and her team also won gold medals in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016.
